Amelogenesis Perfecta / In Search of the Cusp of Carabelli, Among Other Traits.. 2010 Amelogenesis Imperfecta
is an experimental biological research project that fused the disciplines of art and dentistry, to be conducted during a 6-month artist residency at SymbioticA Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. Through tissue culturing biotechnology, Khang will experiment with growing enamel-producing cells (called ameloblasts) into desired shapes, in effect making "enamel sculptures." In Search of the Cusp of Carabelli, Among Other Traits... is a project that explores the history of racial classifications based on dental anatomy, to critically reflect on the admixture of science and race politics throughout history. While in Perth, opportunities for collaborations with Aboriginal Australian communities will be explored.
